Overview
It is the first level of european club cups.
A first attempt to create a Champions Cup was made by FIRA, now Rugby Europe, in the 1960's with the FIRA Champions Cup. This tournament, though, was unsuccesfull and was discontinued after only 3 editions.
In 1995, with the birth of professionalism, the new ECR (European Club Rugby) created the Heineken Cup that was transformed in 2014 in the Champions Cup with the revamping of ECR in EPCR (European Professional Club Rugby).
After the 2014 reform the led to the birth of Champions cup, the qualifiers are as follows:
- The PRO 14 qualifies 7 teams
- The English Premiership qualifies 6 teams
- The French Top 14 qualifies 6 teams
- The last team is the winner of Challenge Cup. If it is already qualified, the place goes to the best not qualified in its national championship
