Overview Honours Roll Related trophies Sources Current Season

It is the main domestic australian competition. It was born in 2014 to fill the gap between regional tournaments and Super Rugby.
Since 2017 it is played also by the Fijian Drua.
From 2014 to 2016, the points assigned during the game were different from usual: a try was worth as usual 5 points but conversion was worth 3 points while drop and penalty kick only 2. These variations were abandoned since 2017, returning to the standard point system.

In the past years there were some attempts to create a domestic competition to complement the usual inter union frendlies:
  • In 1968 the Wallaby Trophy was created, reserved to the 4 main regional selections: Sydney R.U., New South Wales Country, Queensland and Victoria. In 1975 it was extended with a second division reserved to the other regional selections with a promotion/relegation system. In 1976, though, after a disastrous tour to Australia by Fiji that took ARFU close to bankruptcy, the tournament was abandoned.
  • In 1998 the Ricoh Cup National Championship was created, reserved to the 3 Australian Super 12 teams. It was played 3 times and then abandoned. In 2006 it was revamped as the Australian Provincial Championship, reserved to Australian Super 14 teams, but it was played only once.
  • In 2007 the Australian Rugby Championship was created and played by franchises just like the NRC, but also this tournament was played only once.
To develop rugby outside the main cities of Sydney and Brisbane, in 2000 a new competition, reserved to regional union selections other then New South Wales and Queensland, was created: the Australian Rugby Shield. It was a sort of Wallaby Trophy 2nd division revamping. It was abandoned in 2009 for financial problems.
